Cumberland District Annual Meeting Minutes
November 9, 2013
Wallace Lodge #76 - Wallace, NS
Lodge opened on the 3rd Degree at 1:00 pm with the acting WM of Acadia Lodge #13, Bro. Robert Carter, in the East and with those in attendance recorded in the register. Acadia Lodge #13 opened as host to the Annual District Meeting.
We had 31 brothers from the district in attendance for the 2013 Annual District Meeting.
Once opened there was an alarm at the outer door and the DGD of C (pro tem) the VW Bro. Bill Merriam was admitted. He stated that the visiting Masters of the Cumberland lodges and the RW DDGM of Cumberland were without. The Ruling Masters were then admitted and introduced to the lodge.
Following that the RW DDGM Bro. George Anderson was then admitted with all proper ceremony and presented. Once greeted by the WM he then took the chair to conduct the Annual District Meeting for 2013.
The DDGM then welcomed everyone to the Annual Meeting. He stated that the new rules for presenting the Lodge Reports was for the reports to be given to the secretary and a shortened version then presented to the lodge by the WM’s. However, after talking to some of the masters he has decided to do it the way we have in the past with the WM’s giving a full verbal report to those present.
The secretary of Acadia Lodge #13, Bro. Wayne Arsenault, was not able to attend because of family commitments so VW Bro. Gaul has volunteered his services to be the secretary for the annual meeting.
A motion was then made to permit deviation from the published agenda as necessary.
The DGC VW Bro. Bill Merriam then conducted the Remembrance Service for our departed brothers who died since our last Annual Meeting. The names of those brothers are:

COMMENTS ON THE LODGE REPORTS
The floor was opened up for discussion regarding anything arising from the reports.
VW Bro. Bill Merriam rose to say that he thought what Acadia Lodge #13 had done to get old members to return was a great idea. Those who had been Suspended for non-payment of funds may be willing to return if they did not have to pay the total they owed when suspended as required by the Grand Lodge By Laws. Acadia Lodge #13 had sent out a letter telling them they would not have to pay the amount they owed when they left. They only had to pay the current year’s dues and were given this as a one time offer. VW Bro. Merriam thought this may be something other lodges may want to consider.
W Bro. Jim Hannon spoke about the Strategic Planning idea he was presented with at a recent Grand Lodge Workshop. He is trying to get it going at Alexandra Lodge #87 so that we can work on short and long term plans to make our lodge and lodge meetings more productive and interesting.
It was decided that we keep doing our lodge reports as we did today, with the Masters giving the full report not a shortened form. This way the members present can really take home some different or new ideas and suggestions that may work in their lodge in the coming months.
The DDGM spoke regarding some things he has seen in his visits. These he addressed by using material from a workshop given by RW Bro. Alan Linkletter.
A collection was taken up with the proceeds going to the CDMA (Cumberland District Masonic Association).
Total collected $102.45
In closing the DDGM thanked everyone and said that there is to be a District Workshop near the first part of March, 2014.
W Bro. Graeme Bales asked the DDGM where the Grand Master was today. He thought that he would be here today as he has at many other Annual District Meetings in the past. The DDGM said that the GM had been invited but he did not know where he was today.
Bro. Amos Margeson addressed the meeting regarding the recent Caledonian Orchestra show at Trinity St. Stephen’s United Church in Amherst last Saturday, Nov. 2. He said it was one of the best shows he had ever been to.
Bro. Grant Jackson told the DDGM that he would love to see an information session at the next Annual District Meeting regarding the retirement of a charter and the procedure for the joining of lodges; especially, as so many of our lodges have dwindling memberships and are finding it harder all the time to keep their buildings useable.
The DDGM said that he would not wait, but put it on the agenda for our upcoming District Workshop in the Spring.
The DDGM, RW Bro. George Anderson, then closed the Annual District Meeting and returned the gavel to the acting WM of Acadia to close the lodge. The DDGM was them escorted from the lodge.
Meeting closed at 2:30pm.
Respectfully Submitted by,
VW Bro. Mike Gaul
