Cumberland District Annual Meeting Minutes
November 22, 2014
Widow's Son #48 - River Philip
Lodge opened on the 3rd Degree at 1:30 pm with the acting WM of Widow’s Son Lodge #48, RW Bro. George Anderson, in the East and with those in attendance recorded in the register. Widow’s Son Lodge #48 opened as host to the Annual District Meeting.
We had 22 brothers from the district in attendance for the 2014 Annual District Meeting. We were also honoured to have three visitors from outside the district: MW Bro. Paul Frank, RW Bro. Peter Ponsford and RW Bro. Kenneth Simmons. Thus a total of 25 brothers were present.
The other lodge positions were filled as follows: SW - RW Bro. Phil Adams (pro tem), JW - W Bro. Robert Carter (pro tem), SD - Bro. Larry Murray (pro tem), JD/IG - RW Bro. Jack Boyd (pro tem), Chaplain - Bro. Gary Fisher (pro tem), Secr. - VW Bro. Mike Gaul (pro tem) and Tyler - W Bro. Earl Sheppard (pro tem).
Once opened there was an alarm at the outer door and the acting DGDofC, the RW Bro. Neil Delaney, was admitted. He stated that the visiting Masters of the Cumberland lodges and the DDGM of Cumberland were without. The Ruling Masters were then admitted and introduced to the lodge.
Following that the DDGM, RW Bro. Bill Merriam, was then admitted with all proper ceremony and presented. Once greeted by the WM he then took the chair to conduct the Annual District Meeting for 2014.
Thereafter, an alarm at the outer door announced that the GDofC, RW Bro. Kenneth Simmons, wished to enter. Once admitted he informed the DDGM that the GM of Masons of NS was without and was waiting to enter. The GM, the MW Bro. Paul Frank, was then admitted with all due ceremony and presented. The lodge was then typed with an open door.
The DDGM then welcomed everyone to the Annual Meeting. He stated that he was very pleased to see such a good turn out. He then asked everyone with cellphones to please turn them off or put them in vibration mode. RW Bro. Merriam informed the brethren that until a day ago Widow’s Son Lodge had been free of deaths of their members for this year. However, on Thursday, Bro. Ross Rushton had past away. He then proceeded to have a short remembrance service.
The DGC, VW Ray Chapman, then conducted the Remembrance Service for our departed brothers who died since our last Annual Meeting. The names of those brothers are:

ROLL CALL OF LODGES
The lodges with members present were as follows:
Acacia Lodge #8 2 members present.
Acadia Lodge #13 2 members present.
Widow’s Son Lodge #48 3 member present.
Minas Lodge #67 0 members present.
Wimburn Lodge #75 3 members present.
Wallace Lodge #76 2 member present.
King Edward Lodge #86 2 members present.
Alexandra Lodge #87 7 members present.
Laurie Lodge #70 2 members present.
Reports were then received from the nine district lodges with copies being given to the secretary for the DDGM’s file.
Two of the brothers presented the Masonic Education.
RW Bro. George Anderson spoke on the declining membership in our masonic lodges. He gave a report which gave some of the reasons for the universal decline and some possible solutions. One very positive suggestion ( seeing that next mouth is the election month for most of our lodges ) was for each lodge to appoint a member to the Office of Mentor. This person would spearhead a committee to not only mentor the new arrivals but the lodge in general. The brother to occupy this position can draw upon work already prepared by Grand Lodge for its Mentorship program and by doing extra research and study as well.
Secondly, RW Bro. Phil Adams spoke on the duties of the secretaries in our assemblies. His was a very entertaining and note worthy presentation.
A collection was taken up with the proceeds (on a 50/50 basis) going to CEIP and the DeMolay (the two groups being donated to by the CDMA this year). Total collected $151.70
In closing the DDGM commented on the fact that so many of the district lodges are in distress. Some are considering joining with other lodges and some are thinking of giving up their charter altogether. He said that if your lodge needs assistance please come and talk with your CDMA. Come out and support your district organization. There may be some way that we, as a group, can help. The CDMA also needs the lodge participation on a regular basis.
The GM said that we have to work together to make Freemasonry happen. In the recent past some lodges have already joined together because of declining numbers and aging building and have started to grow again in their new settings. Maybe this is what will have to happen here.
The Grand Lodge line officers are making a special effort this year to get out to as many lodges as possible and often on an unofficial basis.
Another thing they are trying to come up with is a way for the lodges and Grand Lodge to work together so that event dates do not conflict.
Lastly he said that there will be a special dinner in Florida put on by the Grand Lodge of NS on March 31, 2015. If you are a Snowbird or know of some let them know and make it a point to come out and enjoy the fellowship.
The GM and the DDGM then retired and RW Bro. Anderson proceeded to close the lodge.
Meeting closed at 3:55pm.

VW Bro. Mike Gaul
