CDMA District Meeting Minutes
September 26, 2013
Widow's Son Lodge #48 - River Philip
Meeting opened at 7:30pm with RW Bro. Alan Linkletter as Chairman. 13 brother masons from the Cumberland District were present.
Motion to allow us to deviate from the published Agenda as necessary was moved by Bro. Dan MacIntosh and 2nd by Bro. Graeme Bales.
Sickness and Regrets - W Bro. Bill Merriam reported that VW Bro. Alan Robily (97 years old), from Widow’s Son, had taken a bad fall.
FINANCIAL REPORT - RW Bro. Phil Adams reported that the budget for 2013-2014 had been approved at the last meeting and was the same as last year’s. Letters will be sent to the lodges shortly asking for the $100 each to support the CDMA including the bursaries we give.
VW bro. Gaul reported that the website is being kept up to date as members give him info about their lodge’s happenings. DDGM RW Bro. Anderson has been faithful in sending in pictures and articles as well as his meetings, visits, etc now as DDGM.
RW Bro. Linkletter also encouraged the lodges to send in anything that was going to be happening so it can be posted and the rest of the district made aware of it.
VW Bro. Gaul said that some of the bills for running the website for another year have been paid but not all. He will be presenting the bill at our next meeting as well he has yet to approach Grand Lodge to see if they will continue their support this year as they have the last two years.
RW Bro. Linkletter stated that the district had presented CEIP with a cheque for $12,200 at their annual picnic in July. RW Bro. Anderson said that CEIP was very grateful for our support. He noted that even with our support there are at present still 50 other families that need to be receiving CEIP’s help and are on a waiting list! RW Bro. Boyd noted that since we started giving to CEIP a few years ago, we have donated around $50,000 so far!
RW Bro. Linkletter brought up the topic of choosing a charity to support for 2013-2014. Do we stay with CEIP or give to another worthwhile cause?
W Bro. Merriam rose to suggest the giving of support to the new hospital that the Shriners are building in Montreal, as it will be used to help so many children in need including those of the Maritimes that may need it.
He said that the Masonic Foundation of NS has never been approached to provide matching funds and it would be great if our district was the first.
Much discussion arose concerning this suggestion.
A final decision was not made on which group to donate to. This will have to be decided at the next meeting.
RW Bro. Linkletter explained that the money from the Foundation is allotted as follows:
-each lodge in each district of NS can access a total of $1500 per year.
- the Foundation will match any request three to one.
-in the Cumberland District we have 9 lodges. Therefore, the total that is available for us to draw upon in our District is $1500 x 9 = $13,500.
- now each lodge can also access this fund individually. For example: if Laurie Lodge raises funds for a particle cause and gets $200. then the Foundation will match it 3 to 1. Thus Laurie Lodge would have $800 to give to their cause. The Foundation has given $600 ( 3 x $200 ); thus of the $1500 allotted to Laurie $900 was not used. This $900 is then accessible by the District Association for any project we have going on.
- this is the process by which money for the District Association is made available for us to access.
- last year the District raised $2500. The Foundation max that they would give is $7,500 (3 x $2500 ); however, there was not that much left that could be given to our district so we only got $6,700 from the Foundation. Thus our cheque to CEIP was $9,200. However, the donations from Wimburn ($1000) and Widow’s Son ($2000) was combined with ours to give a total of $12,200.
District Drama Team
RW Bro. Phil Adams, as head of the team, is looking for more volunteers. He has been asked to put on the Third Degree Drama for Wallace in November; however, their date interferes with the DDGM who is planning an Annual District Meeting for Saturday, Nov. 9. Therefore, he will have to get in touch with Wallace and have them pick another date. If you are interested in the Drama, please get in touch with RW Bro. Adams ( 667-1478 ).
RW Bro. Phil Adams, as secretary of Wimburn, gave it to the secretary of Laurie Lodge where it now waits to be given to Acacia Lodge #8.
Caledonia Orchestra Report
Bro. Tom Mattinson reported on the preparations for the Cal. Orchestra.
Committee Members are:
W Bro. Jim Hannon - Alexandra
W Bro. Jim MacNab - Acadia
W Bro. Amos Margeson - Laurie
RW Bro. Rob Campbell - Acacia
Bro. Ian Mattatall - Wallace
Bro. Dave Sutherland - Acacia
A committee meeting was held on Sept. 16 but only three members were present ( Wimburn Lodge, Alexandra Lodge and Laurie Lodge representatives were present).
Exert from the minutes of their meeting:
Bro. Mattinson said that all things have been booked as needed. We just have to sell the tickets.
Much discussion was had about what to do if we do not sell the 175 by Oct. 2, the deadline for canceling.
A concerted effort is needed by all to sell the 175 before the Oct. 2. The executive will be in touch with Bro. Mattinson on Oct 1 to see how close we are to the 175 and then decide if to go ahead or not.
RW Bro. Boyd is our Rep but he has not been put on the list by Grand Lodge as yet. He will be attending the BOGP in Truro this Saturday. One item he knows will be discussed is that one lodge has requested that their lodge be allowed to wear their own special aprons.
RW Bro. Linkletter asked for volunteers for the Audit Committee, the Public Relations Committee and the Project Committee.
Audit Committee - W Bro. Merriam, W Bro. Dan MacIntosh and VW Bro. Scott McNairn.
Project Committee - Bro. Tom Mattinson, Bro. Terry Porteous
Public Relations Committee - no volunteers yet!
DDGM the RW Bro. George Anderson said that he has made two official visits so far. His schedule is on the Website ( www.cumberlandmasons.ca ). He asked if the lodges had received his letters as yet. Some had not.
He is planning a District Meeting for Nov. 9 in Pugwash at Acadia Lodge at 11am.
District Workshop on March 1 in Amherst.
He said that he had received a copy of the Grand Master’s Award Program and hoped that the lodges would participate this year.
Next meeting will be November 28 ( location will be announced later ).
Motion to adjourn by Bro. Tom Mattinson seconded by RW Bro. Boyd. Meeting adjourned at 9:40pm..
Respectfully Submitted by,
VW Bro. Mike Gaul (CDMA Secretary)
