Cumberland District Masonic Association Meeting Minutes
Sept. 25, 2014
Meeting opened at 7:35pm with RW Bro. Alan Linkletter as Chairman. 13 brother masons from the Cumberland District were present.
Approval of published minutes of last meeting (May 29, 2014) moved by Bro. Travis Saulnier and 2nd by MW Bro. Barry Imber. Motion carried.
Motion to allow us to deviate from the published Agenda as necessary was moved by MW Bro. Barry Imber and 2nd by Bro. Travis Saulnier. Motion carried.
Sickness and Regrets - RW Bro. Bill Merriam said he had called on VW Bro. Archie St Peter. He is still recovering and waiting for the report on the tumor that was removed from his bladder. He has had a lot of visitations and good wishes. He is still glad to see anyone.
RW Bro. Linkletter asked if we should start sending a card to those who are sick. It was decided not to but to let the brothers visit as they are able.
VW Bro. Graham Bales sent his regrets for not attending the meeting through RW Bro. Linkletter.
FINANCIAL REPORT - RW Bro. Phil Adams reported that as of August 31 in our Amherst account we had $663.40
The only lodge that has not sent in its $100 CDMA dues is Acacia, but the treasurer expects to hear from them shortly.
A bill was received from MW Bro. Barry Imber for the giant display cheque that we had made up to use at our charity donation events. It is for $55.20. RW Bro. Boyd moved that we pay the bill. This was seconded by Bro. Saulnier. Motion carried.
Notices will be sent next January (2015) to all lodges requesting their $100 CDMA Dues.
NOTICE OF MOTION
RW Bro. Boyd will move or cause to be moved at our next meeting, that our CDMA fiscal year will be April 1st to March 31st. This is because the old dates did not give the treasurer long enough to have the books ready and audited before the Annual Meeting.
VW Bro. Merriam and VW Bro. McNairn reported on this at the last meeting.
The auditors for the coming year will be appointed at the February meeting according to our constitution.
We received a card of thanks from CEIP and a large thank-you card made by the kids for the $17,050 we gave them. This may be seen on the district website:
RW Bro. George Anderson and his wife attended the Student Success Celebration on June 9, 2014 at the Dr. Carson and Marion Community Centre in Springhill. After a very pleasant buffet the awards and bursaries were presented. The Past DDGM was happy to present the two ladies with their $1,000 each bursaries. Miss Alex MacKay and Miss Penny Lewis were very appreciative of the money they received from the District masons.
Bro. Travis Saulnier organized two BBQs in July that was held in front of his place of business on Victoria Street in Amherst. A few brothers dropped by to help him and RW Bro. Linkletter. The event raised $174 which was turned over to our association.
Discussion was had as to what group we should work to raise money for this year. Should we stay with CEIP or choose another? After some discussion it was felt that we should divide the money this year and give some to CEIP and some to the new DeMolay group that has been started in our district.
Motion was made by MW Bro. Imber that the charities for 2014-2015 be CEIP and DeMolay Amherst. This was 2nd by VW Bro. Ray Chapman. Motion carried.
MW Bro. Imber has agreed to remain in the PR position.
In the past we had a Project Committee. At the Executive meeting we decided to divide the load and form two committees - SOCIAL and WAYS & MEANS.
Social Committee: The committee shall consist of at least three members whose primary focus will be to promote a social relationship among Masons in the Cumberland District of the Grand Lodge of Nova Scotia. The committee shall plan at least one social event for the Brethren of the District during the Masonic Year.
Ways & Means Committee: The committee shall consist of at least three members whose primary focus will be to promote some type of event or
program, in support of the CDMA selected charity as needed. The committee will be charged with the leadership, of any and all such projects, and shall present a viable business plan for such projects for approval of the CDMA Executive prior to implementation of the project. Upon approval of any project the committee shall request the necessary support from the craft to ensure a successful outcome. All masons shall be encouraged to assist the committee as requested.
We are looking for volunteers to take on these positions. If none come forth by the next meeting the chairman will start approaching brothers to get someone to take charge of the committees.
Bro. Saulnier has volunteered to take on the Ways and Means Committee. Thank-you Bro. Travis.
The DDGM reported that he has chosen RW Bro. George Anderson to be our Masonic Education Officer for the district. (This position is under the direction of Grand Lodge not the CDMA.)
district drama team
RW Bro. Phil Adams reported that the team has been doing very well. On May 20th they performed the drama at River Philip for Bro. Ken Rushton and Bro. Wilcox. On July 14th they did it again in Wallace for Bro. David Black and Bro. David Wallace. They are always looking for new members and can also use men to act as understudies.
Any suggestions for improvement are also welcome.
Everyone agreed that they are doing well and their work is much appreciated!
The lodges should keep in mind that anytime we can double up we should. Our lodges are small and it is great when we can get a larger group together to do things especially like the Third Degree and Drama.
The gavel is with Widow’s Son at present and will be going to Alexandra Lodge in November.
VW Bro. Gaul reported that the bills for the website are coming due this time of year. The Grand Lodge PR Committee is being asked for assistance again this year. If that is given then the CDMA will be asked to pay $25 for this website for 2014-2015.
Bro. Travis asked if business cards can be put on the website. This was tried on the Grand Lodge Website and there was trouble over it ( we are not to be using Freemasonry to advertise - promote for financial gain - our businesses) thus we will not be trying this ourselves.
RW Bro. Phil Adams brought up the idea that we should be able to email all the brothers in the district directly without going through the secretaries - to help save time. We will try to put them all into one group so they can be sent emails all at the same time. Most of the lodges send out their notices with the emails visible. Wimburn, King Edward and Wallace do not. We will have to contact them and ask for the emails from these lodges.
The chairman then introduced Bro. Travis Saulnier to speak on DeMolay. Bro. Saulnier has been instrumental in getting the DeMolay started in the District under the guidance of RW Bro. Bill Millet, DDGM of District 7 in New Brunswick. Bro. Saulnier gave us a lot of info on the group and what it does as well as handed out information pamphlets for our reading and to be passed on to our lodges. At present the group has just got started with three boys in the Amherst area. Hopefully it will take off and be a success in the Cumberland District.
CDMA MEETING DATES
Scheduled dates are:
Nov. 22, 2014 River Philip at 1:30pm.
Feb. 26, 2015
May 28, 2015
The November meeting was moved from a Thursday night because the DDGM’s annual meeting is on Saturday and it was felt that that would be a better time to try to get the brothers out to the meeting. It will be a very short meeting after the DDGM’s meeting.
RW Bro. Boyd said that the meeting was supposed to be on Sept. 27th; however, he was informed that there is another more important meeting on the same day so the BOGP was cancelled and rescheduled for Oct. 4.
RW Bro. Bill Merriam had two items to bring to the meeting:
He is also glad that we have some other group that we can help sponsor this year. DeMolay is a worthwhile group to sponsor.
He felt badly that he had to cancel his visit to Laurie Lodge in September because of RW Bro. St Peter’s illness. He will reschedule shortly.
He told the meeting that his officers are:
DGD of C is VW Bro. Gary Sterling
DG Chaplain is VW Bro. Ray Chapman
The location and date for the next meeting:
Next meeting will be Nov. 22, 2014.
Location: River Philip at 1:30pm after the DDGM’s Meeting
The chairman thanked everyone for coming and closed the meeting at 9:40pm.
Motion to close made by MW Bro. Imber and 2nd by Bro. Jim Sicheri.
Refreshments and fellowship were enjoyed by all after the meeting.
Respectfully Submitted by,
VW Bro. Michael Gaul (CDMA Secretary)
