Cumberland District (DDGM's) Annual Workshop
Amherst Lodge Hall
March 29, 2014
Our DDGM, RW Bro. George Anderson, just held the Cumberland District Annual Workshop in Amherst. Sixteen brothers from the district turned out for the 2 1/2 hour workshop, from six of the nine district lodges.
A number of the brothers showed up early and took part in the Amherst Masonic Society’s monthly breakfast. This month the menu was a delicious plate of three pancakes, three sausages topped off with strawberries and whipped cream, juice and tea or coffee!
The workshop started with a mock Lodge Opening/Closing in the lodge room on the main floor of the Amherst Masonic Temple. This was an extremely interesting event as many explanations were given for what was happening and questions were answered as the procedure was performed.
A few high lights from the Mock Lodge Opening/Closing:
-when the lodge is starting its opening ritual the outer door to the lodge is open - the IG or JD goes to the door and tells the Tyler the WM is about to open the lodge...., then the IG or JD closes the door and knocks 3 times, the Tyler answers with his 3 knocks - the IG or JD returns to his place.
-when the WM addresses you, you stand on the sign of fidelity. (make the sign and drop your arm).
-during the opening when the SW is telling why the WM is in the East and the WM raps 3 time, the SW should not speak while the Master is rapping.
-SD should give the Master a list of the names of all Past and Current Grand Lodge Officers who are visiting so that he can invite them by name to sit in the East. It is considered good form for them to accept, unless they are with a group from their lodge and wish to remain with their visiting group.
-squaring the lodge - this is very important and the SD and others should practice this. Also the officers with staves - carry the stave in your right hand. While walking hold it at a 30 degree angle, when stopped it should be resting on the floor in a vertical position. SD and JD do not salute while holding a stave.
-when the SD has finished opening the great lights he makes the Sign of the Degree (not the Sign of Fidelity) before leaving the altar.
-when you stand to speak to the WM, you must make the Sign of the Degree, the WM replies with the Sign of Fidelity.
-when you want to address someone other than the WM, you must stand, make the Sign of the Degree and say, “WM through you to Bro. XYZ”.
-making of the Sign of Fidelity - the fingers and the thumb form the angle of a square. They should be a little more to the left, over the heart, than as seen in this picture.
-WM - you never give up your collar.
-Officers if you can not attend the regular lodge meeting it is only good manners for you to call and ask someone else if they can sit in your place and then call and let the WM know.
After the Mock Lodge Opening/Closing we went to the lodge hall to finish the workshop. The topics covered were:
This was a very informative and enjoyable workshop. Those who took the time to attend went away with a lot of good info which can now be taken back to their lodges and used as part of their Masonic Education at each month’s meeting.
